3 Reviews from Heather! Rebirth, Amethyst Eyes, and Emma...to Begin Again by Debbie Brown

Title: Rebirth
Author: Debbie Brown
Genre: Fantasy
Release Date: January 2012

Summary:

Fleeing their homes in the city, three teens find themselves on the run with little kids in tow. As people vanish and buildings crumble, they seek shelter in the nearby mountains. Survival depends on their ability to adapt with nothing more than the items pilfered from a crumbling store. Hovering in the background is the constant threat of being discovered by the aliens, adding to the pressure the teens feel having no shelter, a limited supply of food and the well-being of three children to ensure. They must come up with some creative solutions before the inevitable onset of winter, while attempting to remain “invisible” to avoid capture. Being mature and responsible is no longer optional as they deal with their individual personalities, traumas, and learn to raise a baby. Unaware of the extent of the alien destruction, they can’t help but wonder if all their efforts are in vain.
Heather's Review:

I must admit I was expecting this to be some connection to Amethyst Eyes and Emma . . . to Begin Again.  However, this is a story of survival at it’s basic mixed with science fiction.
When a group of young children find themselves having to fight to stay alive, the courage they find within themselves and each other give us hope that anything can happen if we have the will.    It’s a well written story and the characters are very appealing and easy to sympathize with, partially because of their ages but mostly because of the way they handle themselves.

I was very wrapped up in the story and it’s characters and couldn’t stop reading it till I finally flipped to the last page.  I have to admit that by the end I felt the story had become a moral judgement on today’s society, although I did not feel preached at but it does make me lower my rating just a little.  I still found this an exciting read and would be interested to read a sequel if the author writes one.  Definitely an interesting read for lovers of science fiction and young adult genres.

Title: Amethyst Eyes
Author: Debbie Brown
Genre: Science Fiction/Fantasy
Release Date: October 2013

Summary:

The biggest thing on 15-year-old Tommy's mind is convincing Mom to let him go to the drive-in, but when an accident claims his mother's life and puts him in the hospital, the arrival of his estranged, alien father brings more changes than he had bargained for. It doesn't take his father long to figure out that Tommy knows nothing about who or what he is. Without any explanation, Tommy finds himself onboard his father's spaceship where he is forced to trust a man he does not know in a world he knows even less about.

Adapting to his new life seems overwhelming, and his father's solution may prove to be Tommy's finest challenge yet...Jayden. A few months younger than Tommy, high strung and always in a mood, the doctor's daughter definitely didn't like being 'told' to help Tommy fit in. Jayden is not the most welcoming or patient of tutors, let alone a friend. As fate would have it, Tommy quickly learns that none of these things compare to the peril that comes from being born with amethyst eyes.

Heather's Review:

I have been a fan of science fiction ever since I first saw Star Wars in 1977 at the age of 4.  As I got older and began reading, I found myself drawn to the genre in book form as well.  I must say that I generally have never been much of a reader of the young adult genre, even when I was a young adult, but the sci-fi/fantasy aspect of the summary intrigued me.  I’m so glad I took the leap.

I really enjoyed how the author took an everyday dramatic human tragedy to set the story in motion.  You can’t help but want to just wrap Tommy up in a tight bear hug and protect him from the grief he faces with the loss of his mother.  His father’s entrance into his life is literally a world-shattering occurrence and before Tommy knows it, his life is changed in ways that no one, especially no 15 year old, could ever see coming.

The author has managed to merge the fantasy/sci-fi and young adult genres fluently in a way I never expected.  If you don’t usually read either of these genres but you still love a well written story with likeable and intriguing characters, I highly recommend giving Amethyst Eyes a chance.  I can’t say it was enough to turn me into a young adult genre fan but it definitely has turned me into a Debbie Brown fan.

Title: Emma...to begin again
Author: Debbie Brown
Genre: Fantasy/Romance
Release Date: March 2013

Summary:

As an ER nurse, Emma knows life can change in the blink of an eye. When fate comes knocking, she finds herself far away from the city and back on the mountain ranch where she grew up -with the intention to close up and sell the house so she can move on. But fate isn’t done with her yet, and that’s when she finds him, the one Two-Feathers calls ‘Star Brother’. Wounded and unconscious, Emma assumes he’s a military test pilot, until he opens his amethyst eyes and stares into the very essence of her being.

Heather's Review:

Once again, I found myself thrown into a world blended of reality and fantasy.  Enjoyable characters, stunning settings, mixed with romance and drama. I am finding this story harder to review and not give out spoilers but at the same time, because it is pretty obviously a prequel to Amethyst Eyes, then spoilers are already in your head, if you’ve read it first.

This is still a story in itself and definitely one to read.  In my opinion it would flow a little easier if it’s read prior to Amethyst Eyes but it’s not a necessity.  Emma is very easy to relate to as is her friendship with Two-feathers.  Her love for Dthau Mahaz and the acceptance for who or what he is, will tug at so many emotions that will leave you feeling broken hearted and completely enamored with them by the last page.
